Marek Belka, president of the National Bank of Poland, has invited Michał Federowicz, director of IBE, to join the Council for Economic Education in recognition of his professional knowledge and experience. The inaugural meeting of the Council took place on September 1 in the headquarters of the National Bank of Poland in Warsaw.
.The NBP is devising and implementing a range of activities whose aim is to better acquaint the public not only with the principles of how the central bank functions, but also with a knowledge of economics in general. As part of this initiative NBP is creating and supporting educational projects on the subject of economics aimed at different target audiences, particularly school and academic environments, leaders of public opinion and sections of the community threatened by economic exclusion. The NBP has not only started a bursary scheme to provide greater educational opportunities for young people studying economics, but runs an extensive publishing programme and maintains the Central Library of the NBP, one of the best stocked Polish academic libraries dealing with economics.
The newly established Council is to be an advisory body providing opinion on the NBP tasks in the area of economic education and an advisory voice from outside of the bank helping to maintain objectivity in planning processes and the choice of educational activities. From the viewpoint of the NBP, the appointment of the Council for Economic Education creates a permanent and well-ordered environment for working together with representatives of nonprofessional and professional communities connected with educational and academic activity, social communication and financial policy.
The Council Chairperson is Halina Wasilewska-Trenkner and the Vice-Chairperson is Stanisław Owsiak.
