School Effectiveness Research Unit

Published on Monday, 05 December 2011 03:13

The research focus of the Unit is to identify key determinants of the effectiveness of school education.

The Unit's contribution to the project are two longitudinal studies of student attainment and their biological, psychological, social and educational determinants.

.

The first study started in autumn 2010 and includes the cohort of students who began the third grade of primary schools that year. This study will help to record the state from before the new core curriculum introduction and the reduction of school age (officially scheduled for 2012). The second study will begin in 2012 and will include the cohort of students in the first grade of primary school. The study will provide data on the state of the school system after the introduction of the new core curriculum and the entrance of six-year-olds into schools. In June 2015, students from the first longitudinal study will finish the first grade of lower secondary schools and the students from the second longitudinal study - the third grade of primary school.

The School Effectiveness Study elements:

  • design and development of an observation tool (computer application) and a two-stage pilot study of the tool in the third grades of primary school.
  • design and development of the School System Entrance Test of Skills, for children entering education in primary schools (6 and 7 year olds) and the test pilot and standardization study in the target age group
