The aim of the International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS) is to assess how well are pupils prepared for life in the information era - the readiness being  ”an ability to use computers for research, creation and communication in order to do participate effectively in life at home, school, work and in society”. The study, which is scheduled for completion in 2013, will provide a deeper insight into the preparation of Polish pupils to function in the “information age”; it will also provide foundation for identifying national/regional differences and indicating the position of Poland internationally. An important goal of the study is also to provide information on the factors stimulating and hindering the development of information literacy among young Poles which might prove very helpful in the creation of a long-term strategy.

Students of the second class of Polish middle schools (who will do an computerized test assessing their skills and complete a student's questionnaire), their teachers (teacher questionnaire) and schools (school questionnaire) will take part in the study.

Additional information essential for international comparison will be provided by a national questionnaire, which will help in gathering of information on topics such as national educational policy, ICT resources and the most popular methods for using them in schools.

The project is run in cooperation with the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA).
